There are 3 basic things you need to have a website. They are:
- A Domain Name
The Domain Names can be purchased from lots of different companies on the Internet. The domain name create the Internet address for your website.
- A Web Hosting Company
This is the company that links your domain name to your website files. In the beginning days of websites lots of people thought the best way was to host the website files on their own computers. These days with monthly costs as low a $6.95/month it is inadvisible to use this method. Huge companies with huge staffs exist to support your website.
- Website Design Files
These are the files that make up your website. This leads you to a web designer or a web design system.
Domain Names

Web Hosting
Over the years I have built many websites hosted by many different Web Hosting companies. My experiences have varied from very good to horrible. Going with the most expensive company does not insure great service, nor interestingly enough neither does going with the least expensive company.
At the top of the list for choosing a web hosting company should be support. Companies that try to handle all their questions via a "knowledgebase" or via a complicated series of choices to be able to submit a problem are not the answer. The best support has proven to be talking with a real person, from your own country. It can be so difficult communcating a problem who does not speak the same native language as you do.

Web Design
This is where you have some choices. You can try to build your website yourself. Most web hosting companies have some form of build it yourself website builder. This may be all that you need if you are happy with the look and are technical enough to use he website builder.
Another solution is to work with a web designer. Then they can take care of all the website building and setup without you having to learn to build websites.
