About Shawna

Shawna is a licensed substance abuse counselor in AZ. She has been working exclusively with teens and parents for over ten years. She has created and implemented substance abuse awareness programs in 11 schools in California, worked in public mental health in the Verde Valley for four years, was a clinical director for a 90 day adolescent rehab center for over a year, contracted with juvenile probation in the Verde Valley for 8 years, , and is currently in private practice in the Verde Valley and Phoenix. She is also the audio author for the self help CD series, "Parents!! Things to Know if Your Teen is Using Drugs" and is working on a DVD/CD series called, "Teens!! Things to Know if You Want to Quit Using Drugs". Shawna hopes to be on Oprah one day to share her self help CD series and expertise with the country. Shawna's goal until then is pursue new and innovative ways to teach and inspire those who want to be taught and inspired!

This week, Shawna Bowen has a conversation with a sober teen about the challenges and gifts he has received as the result of his addiction and recovery. Shawna welcomes callers to ask questions, and hopes this teen can offer insight and support to parents and teens alike struggling with addiction.

Monday October 26, 2009 - The James Ray Incident: Let's Talk About Accountability & Prevention

With so many questions still unanswered about the James Ray incident, and so many disturbing details coming to light, Shawna is holding another forum for discussion.

The media turned to Shawna for her straightforward reports of what she saw the night of the James Ray sweat lodge.  They continue to call on her because of her professional experience and her level-headed approach as she calls for James Ray to be accountable for the trauma he caused so many people.

Shawna will focus on topics that speak to prevention of this kind of tragedy in the future.  She’ll be exploring accountability within the self-help community (for both speakers and participants), the significance of having professional credentials, and the impact of the overwhelming stress that James Ray inflicted upon his participants.

Callers are encouraged to participate in the discussion and are requested to keep with the spirit of the call by being constructive.

Our condolences and prayers go out to the families of all of those who were hurt by this incident.

In a departure from her usual topic, join Shawna Bowen for a first-hand account of what happened at the recent Sedona retreat with James Arthur Ray. Shawna was on site at the time of the crisis to support the participants and will be sharing her insights into authority- its importance and its pitfalls. Also joining the show is Jim Tree, who has been responsible for the “United Nations Turtle Pipe”, the Ceremonial Pipe presented to the U.N. in 1978. Jim holds this Pipe for ceremonies worldwide representing NALA (Native American Leadership Alliance). Jim will give background about how a traditional sweat lodge is run, as well as give insight into the differences between tradition and what happened at the James Ray event.
